Salt-Free Water Softener Systems Services in Central Florida
A salt-free unit is a conditioner. It changes how calcium and magnesium behave so less scale sticks to glass and heating surfaces. It does not pull those minerals out of the water the way a salt softener does.
True Plumbers & AC installs both in Lakeland, Plant City, and Winter Haven. We test the water at the house first. The salt-system page is water softener. This page is the comparison, so you do not buy the wrong tank.
What a salt-free water softener does not remove
Hardness stays in the water. A test strip after a conditioner will still read hard. Soap will not feel the way it does on a salt system. Spots on a shower door can get better. The grains per gallon do not drop to zero.
A conditioner also does not, by itself, remove lead, bacteria, or nitrate. Any claim that a salt-free tank does all of that is a filter claim, and it has to name the cartridge. We do not list those removals for a conditioner alone.
Water conditioner versus water softener
A salt softener is ion exchange. Resin swaps sodium or potassium for calcium and magnesium, then regenerates with a brine tank. The water leaves softer. You buy salt and you have a discharge to deal with.
A salt-free conditioner has no brine tank and no regeneration cycle. It is the right conversation when you want less scale and you do not want a salt tank in the garage. It is the wrong conversation when you want soft water you can feel and a hardness test that falls.
When a salt unit is the right tank
Choose the salt softener when the heater pops from scale, the glass stays spotted after you dry it, and a hardness test at the hose bib is high enough that a conditioner will leave the same number. We size that unit from the test, not from a guess.
The install, the brine tank, and the service are written up on the water softener page. We do not repeat that whole page here. If you already own a salt unit that stopped regenerating, that is a repair on that page, not a reason to switch to salt-free.
Salt-free versus a salt softener in the same house
People search this as salt free versus salt. The split is simple. Salt changes the hardness number. Salt-free leaves the number and tries to keep the minerals from plating onto surfaces. You can taste or feel the salt system. You mostly see the salt-free system on the shower glass over a few weeks.
We will not install a conditioner and call it a softener on the invoice. The equipment name on the quote matches what the tank does.
Spots on glass after a salt-free install
Some spots remain because the minerals are still in the water. They wipe off more easily when the conditioner is doing its job. Spots that look the same as the week before the install mean we retest and check bypass valves before anyone adds a second gadget.
A carbon stage can sit with a conditioner when the complaint is chlorine smell, which is a taste issue, separate from hardness. We name that stage on the quote. We do not fold chlorine, odor, and hardness into one sentence.
A salt-free unit and the water heater
Scale in a tank water heater comes from hardness. A conditioner can slow new scale on some surfaces. It does not dissolve the sediment already sitting in the tank, and it does not drop the hardness the way resin does. A heater that pops still needs a flush or a repair.
If the heater is the reason you called, read water heater repair and test the water before you buy either softener. A noisy heater and a salt-free brochure are not the same job.

What we test before we install
We test hardness at the house. On a private well we also want iron in the conversation, because iron stains are a different media than a conditioner. City water in Lakeland and Plant City is a different starting point than a well. We do not size equipment from a zip code.
You get the number, then the two options with what each one leaves in the water. Call (863) 667-6364 and ask for the water test. The quote comes after the test.
Where this page stops
This page is the salt-free comparison. Filters under the kitchen sink, reverse osmosis, and a salt softener each have their own page. A drinking-water filter does not treat the shower. A conditioner does not make the kitchen tap a treatment system for lead.
If you want the salt tank, go to water softener. If you want less scale and no brine tank, call and we will test before we order the conditioner.
